Bookworm

Lizzy's caught the reading bug, and it's so awesome to behold. More and more, we find her reading books to herself, reading books to Peter, and even reading to Catherine. Some of her favorites lately are Dr. Seuss. Now, I've never been a huge Seuss fan (believe it or not), but I have to say, having a new reader in the house has made me a total convert. He's awesome! His books are so sweet and charming, and totally build confidence in kids. Lizzy is so proud of herself, and it's amazing how quickly it's all coming together for her. I've told her the more you read, the better you feel, and then the more you want to read- a perfect circle.

Friends

Peter has a very special friend at school. His name is Evan. Evan also happens to be our neighbor, so we get to play with him a lot. Evan has become Peter's special friend at school. Peter looks forward to seeing him, seeks him out the moment we get there, and has lots to say about Evan. Thank goodness for Evan! He has turned the uncertainty of school into a safe sanctuary. These friends could not be more different, and perhaps that's what draws them together. Evan is a busy bee. He's into everything, daring, talkative, charming, and a risk-taker. Peter is calm. He's cautious, slow to warm to new situations, an observer, and a thinker. Evan brings out Peter's silly side. He allows Peter an "in" to social situations at school. Evan's great to run around with, wrestle with, and is always up for a good time. How wonderful to make a connection with a special friend. I'm so happy Peter has Evan.

Sleeping Beauty

Catherine is a crazy good sleeper. I even hate to write this down, because I don't want to jinx myself. She sleeps way better than any of the other kids- it's amazing. She goes down easily at 7:00, sleeps peacefully for 12 hours, then wakes at 7:00 happy and ready for the day. It's so awesome! Often when I put Catherine down for her nap, she likes to look at herself in her little mirror. She'll start sucking her thumb, the eyes will droop, and she'll lay her other arm across her face. Before long, her whole body is relaxed and she's in dreamland. Oh, there is nothing more wonderful than a peacefully sleeping baby.

Pit Crew Everywhere

What could be more fun than going for a bike ride? How about wearing your pit crew "uniform" while taking your wheels out for a spin- perfect. Peter loves going for bike rides. He's actually really getting the hang of it now. Where I used to have to urge him along at a snail's pace, I now have to run, pushing Catherine in her stroller, to catch up with him. Soon Catherine will be big enough to fit on the back of my bike. I'm looking forward to a fun bike-riding summer.

Readers

We went over to our cousins' house for dinner because Jack was visiting from college. Everyone was super excited to see him, and as usual, he was incredibly patient with all the little kids, letting them climb all over him and chase him around. While we were waiting for dinner, Lizzy and Caroline sat down on the couch together and began reading to one another. I was amazed, listening from the other room, to hear these sweet girls taking turns reading together. Not only was it adorable to see them sharing such a lovely moment together, it was amazing to realize wow, these girls can actually read! The thing about milestones, at least for me, is that they sneak up on you. You anticipate them and imagine what it will be like when they've been accomplished, but they always seem so distant, like my kid will never, ever be big enough to do that! Then BOOM! They're doing it, whatever "it" may be- sitting up, crawling, walking, talking, monkey bars, reading- aaaggghhh! Slow down already, you kids are just getting way too big, way too capable, and way too amazing! Emerging literacy is truly beautiful and breath-taking. I've loved, loved, loved watching Lizzy over the years draw, write letters and words, begin to write stories, and "read" books. Now, she's really putting it all together and it's awesome. The thing about reading is, once you begin to break the code, it's like a waterfall, washing over you all at once, clarity sinking in. She's getting it, really getting it, and it's so fun to see!

Opening Day

Our friend Trevor is playing baseball this year, and he stopped by on Opening Day to show us his special uniform. He looked pretty snazzy, and I, of course, was quick to break out the camera. I got this awesome, totally classic shot. Where do I even begin? Of course I love Trevor in his adorable uniform, crisp white pants, glove and cleats ready, proud smile on his face. Then there's Lizzy, front and center, trying to pretend she doesn't want her picture taken, but we all really know the truth. But it might be Peter who takes the cake here. Let's discuss his pit-crew "uniform" which Grandma gave him for Christmas. It's become a near daily staple in his wardrobe, and it cracks me up every time I see him in it. Tight pants.......mock turtleneck......stripe down the side........it's just.......perfect. But my very favorite part of this picture is Peter's hero-worship smile he's beaming at Lizzy. It totally captures my sweet boy, his bright smile, and how much he loves his big sister.

Grandparents Day

We are so, so lucky to live near our Grandparents. No one loves you like your Grandma and Grandpa, and it's been so wonderful that our children have gotten to really know their grandparents and spend a lot of special time with them. Lizzy had Grandparents Day at her school. Our dedicated grandparents made the trek from all corners of the Bay Area, early in the morning, to spend the day with Lizzy. The day began with Mass, and it was extra special because Lizzy got to sit with her Grandmas and Papa. Afterwards, the Grandparents enjoyed some refreshments, then visited Lizzy in her classroom. Since it was a half day, we all had lunch together after. Believe it or not, lunch out, in a semi-nice restaurant, with a five-year-old, three-year-old, and baby, was actually enjoyable. What could have been a recipe for disaster was a lovely meal together. It could have been the 1:1 supervision, but I'll chalk it up to some extra-special grandparent magic.

Secret Surprises

Lizzy is a lover. She is incredibly thoughtful, kind, and generous. She is always thinking about other people, and the way she shows this is by creating adorable little presents and surprises. She has made me so many wonderful cards, they are bursting out of an envelope in my night stand, and I treasure each and every one. She truly shows her love by giving. I'm so blessed by the wonderful surprises she leaves for me all over the house. One night I was getting ready to go to bed, and this is what I found on my pillow- an adorable card wrapped in a gorgeous red ribbon. How lucky am I?

Future Docs

You know how some kids have a really sweet bedtime routine? Read a special story, snuggle with mommy and daddy, have lots of hugs and kisses, then off to dreamland? Well, we have that too, but...........lately our daddy has added a new twist to the bedtime routine. Pat found an awesome skeleton at the bookstore when he took the kids one day for an outing. The skeleton is very realistic with removable bones and organs. The kids love it, especially Lizzy. Now Lizzy will often ask Pat, "Daddy, do you have any stories for us from work?" On special nights, Pat will tell her to get the skeleton. They'll go through the different parts, and Pat will tell the kids about one of his patients. The kids sit there, enraptured, loving all the gory details. Maybe we have some budding doctors amongst us.

Sweetness

Sweet smile, sweet face, sweet girl. Catherine is a happy, smiley, contented baby- we are so very, very blessed. She's big in all the right places- big eyes, big cheeks, big smile. Perfect!

Bathing Beauty

It's official: Catherine is one really big baby now. For months I've been giving her a bath in the sink every morning, and we finally reached the point where I could no longer squeeze her in. Believe me, I tried, and I kept her in that sink for as long as I possibly could, because once you leave the sink you're the real deal- one big baby! Now Catherine has her own special little tub that she can recline in and enjoy her bath. It's slightly more spacious, but I know it's only a matter of time before we have to move to the bathtub......

Busy Baby

When Catherine is lying down, Peter will often say to me, "Look, Mommy! Catherine is doing her exercises!" And she is! She's kicking, she's moving her legs, she's looking all around. Recently she's reaching for things, grabbing onto anything she can, putting her hands in her mouth, and rolling to her side. For someone who can't really go anywhere, she is one busy lady!

Almost There!

Catherine is getting to be such a big girl now! She is this close to being able to roll over. She's actually done it a few times, much to all of our delight. But rolling over isn't really that cool after all. Catherine prefers to roll to her side and hang out there for a while. It turns out that this is a perfect position for maximum thumb sucking with minimum effort. Hmmmm, who would have thought? So efficient so early- she must be brilliant.

Sleepy Boy

Peter is such a big boy now. He is so busy all day long playing with his cars, building things, scootering and riding his bike- whew! It's enough to make anyone want to take a little rest. Anyone, that is, except Peter. Peter's way too big now for silly little things like naps. He can't miss one minute of the action! That's why sometimes, when he slows down for just a moment, his eyes will droop, his body will relax, and I'll get to smile to myself watching my little boy catch a few zzzzz's. The other day while we were waiting for Lizzy at her gymnastics class, Peter just couldn't keep his eyes open. He fell asleep right in his chair! He looked so precious resting there! I guess even big boys need a little shut-eye now and then.

One Day.....

One day......oh, one day.......I know Catherine will be able to join in all the fun that Lizzy and Peter have. For now, she must content herself with sitting in her bouncy seat, watching all their adventures. She has a perfect front row seat, and boy does she love it. Buildings going up, fun with legos, pictures being created, all sorts of imaginary games.......nothing escapes the watchful eyes of Catherine. She loves being a part of the action, and while she can't actually join in, she sure does love watching. Lizzy and Peter are pretty busy with all their playing, but they often take the time to talk with Catherine, run over to give her a hug and kiss, and show her their creations. She's already a part of the mix in her own special way.

Handy

Catherine has discovered something truly wonderful about herself..........her hands. Turns out they are super fun to play with. Not only is it exciting to grasp them together, they're even better in her mouth! Of course it was only a matter of time- the girl who loves to suck her thumb has found a new pastime in her hands and fingers. Hey why stop with a thumb when all the fingers are so much better?

Worker

If you ask Peter what he wants to be when he grows up, he would most likely tell you "a worker." The guy loves to "fix" stuff. He is constantly setting up shop, whenever and wherever he can, and has a broad area of expertise. From cars, to scooters, to racetracks and blocks, lots and lots of "fixing" is happening all around us. In case you can't quite see it, this is Peter's garage that he likes to make next to our driveway. He carefully parks any and all wheeled vehicles here, takes out some tools, tinkers away, often fills them up with gas, and then is on his merry way. It truly is wonderful having someone so handy around the house.

Welcome, Fairies

Hello, fairies! Here is a special store that Lizzy made for you. You may want to pick up some of the delicious food or essential trinkets she's arranged for you. She certainly has a flair for organization and display!

Big Boy, No Binks

It's been a loooonnnggg time coming, some may even say way too long in coming, but Peter is officially done with binks! And there is something to be said for good timing, or waiting until someone is ready, or heck, just good karma, because this was the all time easiest transition we've ever had. I noticed that Peter had bitten a pretty sizable hole in his binkie, and I worried he was going to choke on it in the night, so I snipped it off. In the morning, he came into my room, and with no drama whatsoever told me his binkie had a hole in it. I told him the Binkie Fairy must have come, and that since he was done with binkies he could pick out a toy from the toy store. Well, that night he went to bed without shedding a tear, fell right asleep, and hasn't looked back. We got the most awesome race track as a special treat, and it's definitely filled the void any binkie might have left. I'm not sorry to see those binkies go, but I am a little nostalgic that we've taken another step away from babyhood, and further into boyhood. He's surely a big boy now!

Cousin Love

We visited our cousins, and of course we already knew they are great. They're fun and adventurous, generous and kind, and always up for a great time. But there's something else about them........they love babies! I mean they really, really love babies.......all of them, even their dog! I think this is the mark of truly awesome people! Catherine, you were so lucky! Everyone wanted to hold you, coo at you, ooohh and aaahhh over your "tricks." But beyond that, everyone wanted to love you, whole-heartedly, unabashedly, literally pouring out onto you........love. Auntie Elizabeth was thrilled to give you a bath. She was so gentle, so sweet, just talking with you and cleaning you up. You are so very lucky to be so deeply loved by such wonderful people.

Rose Amongst the Thorns

One of these things is not like the others.......... Oh, Lizzy! You truly are the rose amongst the thorns (or vice versa depending upon the day) on our little stretch of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is teeming with kids, they are literally pouring out of the houses and into the streets, and they're awesome, they're just all........boys! Thank goodness for you! You can be rough and tumble and keep right up with them, tearing down the street on your scooter and giving me a heart attack. But you can also be quiet and calm, discovering tiny pockets of nature we didn't know existed, content in your own skin to play in your own wonderful, imaginary world. On my favorite days, you can cuddle right up to my side, have conversation with the other mommies, or take somebody's little brother under your wing and gently play a sweet game with them. You are just what we all need to add a touch of sanity to a sometimes insane stretch of cement.

Hearts Galore

Heart pockets, heart dress........not too much can possibly be cuter than that!

My Valentine

Here's one of my Valentines.......and aren't I so lucky to have three (well, they're my tiny Valentines anyways.......of course, my true Valentine is Daddy:))! Sweet Lizzy was so excited to celebrate Valentines Day at school. She got to wear a special outfit that day, and believe it or not, I was able to talk her out of sweatpants and into something adorable! Lizzy hand-made the most darling Valentines for her classmates. She cut three hearts and made them into flowers and hand-wrote each child's name. Such patience, such thoughtfulness, such dedication and care- so very Lizzy. Lizzy got to have a special Valentines snack and I even got to come in and share some of our favorite Valentines books. What a wonderful day to share with my lovely Valentine.
